Music Appreciation

 PART 1
Preface: Don't say you don't know classical music because you do...

Rossini "William Tell Overture" (:15)
       (Rossini Funny William Tell)
Mozart "Eine kleine Nacht Musik

Pachelbel "Canon in D"
Maroon 5

Maroon & Pachelbel
Offenbach "Orpheus in The Underworld"
Bizet "Les Toreadors"
Khachatryan "Sabre Dance"
Copland "Hoe-down from Rodeo"

What is the definition of MUSIC for this class? Organized Sound

John Cage's 4'33

First Things First: a (very) few generalizations about music

1. Music is...
often complicated--and that can be a good thing
              JSBach
and it's often simple--in a complicated way--and that good too
              Beethoven

2. Music can be a Call to Action--you hear a certain tune and react:
Star
Mendelssohn
Wagner
Elgar
Fight
More Fight
Mood for...

Sometimes this "action" is a Call to Understanding or Call to Change:
We Shall Overcome  (Pete Seeger :17)

3. Music usually has a pulse and the speed of this pulse changes you. If the speed of the pulse (beat) of music increases or decreases this changes you. Also when there is NO PULSE, this changes you also.
Ravel (:17, 3:15, 9:37, 13:08, 15:40)
Goodman
Gregorian Chant
Hall of the Mountain King

4.  Music has a personality and the "personality" of the music has a tendency to alter or change our per personality.
Mussorgsky 1 (start then Mussorgsky 2 3:20)
Mussorgsky 2 (see above)
Muddy Waters/Rolling Stones
Andy Grammar

5. Music is vibrations and vibrations--and vibration combinations--change you. These sounds, these vibrations, can be memorable melody that moves us or no melody at all.  It's a composers art and we are moved by the results. These viabrations are strung together and we are moved emotionally when we hear them.
     Class examples
Psyco
Schoenberg

6. Music enhances the story...sometimes TELLS the story. Music allowes us to add our own emiotions to a level that simply telling the story could never do.
Carmen (Met)
Moldau
